A Guide to Auto Suspension Basics

A Guide to Auto Suspension Basics

Drivers should have these facts about auto suspension systems

Auto suspension systems are complex. They are also very necessary to keep a vehicle operating.

Thurston County Transmission offers more than just transmission service. If you want to know more about our basic auto services, please contact us for answers to your car questions!

What do I need to know about auto suspension?

As a driver, you should know at least the basics when it comes to each system of your vehicle. Suspension is responsible for the smooth ride of your vehicle. Suspension systems affect:

  • Ride height
  • Handling
  • Weight transfer
  • Braking

If your suspension is not well maintained, the performance of your vehicle is likely to dip.

How often do I need to plan on auto suspension maintenance?

Each component has a unique maintenance schedule. Tire rotation is a very basic suspension service, for example, and it should happen every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Most oil change services will offer to rotate your tires while they work.

It is smart to have your suspension inspected every 30,000 miles or so. You may need major suspension work if you experience one of the following:

  • Bumpy ride on a smooth road
  • Brake pads wear down sooner than expected
  • Whining noises (metal on metal) when you go up or down a hill
  • Clunking noise when you turn

Is auto suspension maintenance expensive?

A basic adjustment of your shocks or leaf springs is not too pricey. Similarly, if you need to have a single CV joint, bushing or other component replaced, that is usually a quick, affordable fix.

Remember that paying now for basic maintenance almost always saves drivers money in the long run. It is better to have a sway bar repaired instead of letting it break, causing damage to other parts that must then be replaced.

What about custom auto suspension options?

Some people who drive performance vehicles want to ride low to the ground. Offroad enthusiasts often lift their SUV or truck. It comes down to each individual driver, but suspension modifications may add value or boost performance.

Be sure to ask the auto suspension experts at Thurston County Transmission for modification or maintenance advice!
